Engineering Solution Trials – Works Approval Extended

In recent years, CCL has worked with The Department of Water and Environmental Regulation (DWER) to investigate and understand odour concerns raised by the local communities in the Munster, Beeliar and Yangebup suburbs of the City of Cockburn.

Following independent investigations, CCL identified an odour can be generated when shellsand, the raw material for lime production, is heated between 400°C and 600°C. Since identifying the source of odour and the potential impact of increased temperatures, CCL has been investigating an option that would change the temperature profile in our kilns.

In August 2021, the Department of Water and Environmental Regulation (DWER) approved Cockburn Cement to conduct trials to explore ways to reduce the risk of odour in the stacks at the Munster site for a period of one year to August 2022. Since then, we have undertaken engineering work to build the required infrastructure to trial the innovative engineering solution. The trial will see a change in the feed location of shell sand and the temperature profile of the kiln with the anticipated outcome is that the solution will reduce or eliminate the risk of odour in the kiln stacks.

Earlier this year, we applied to extend the expiry of this Works Approval from August 2022 to May 2023 to allow for trials to continue and ensure we capture essential information from the 2022/23 summer period. We are pleased to share that the extension of the Works Approval was granted by DWER on Monday, 15 August 2022.

In May this year, we undertook engineering work to build the required infrastructure to trial the innovative engineering solution and the project has now entered the environmental commissioning phase.  Trials will continue over the extended duration of the amended Works Approval.

We look forward to continuing the trial in accordance with the terms of the Works approval and providing you with regular updates on the trials and the results as they progress.
