Cockburn Cement – listening to the community

Community Forum – 29 September

We had a productive turnout of 52 attendees from the local 6164 area, and your engagement provided us with invaluable insights into the community’s key concerns, notably around odour, dust management, site rehabilitation, and environmental stewardship.

Forum advertising and outreach

To ensure broad community participation, we executed a multi-channel outreach campaign using email, social media and print and direct outreach.

Forum overview and feedback

At the event Colin led a presentation on Cockburn Cement’s latest updates, covering odour management initiatives, feed diversion progress, dust mitigation strategies, and site improvement plans. This was followed by an open Q&A where six Cockburn Cement team members responded to community questions, creating a transparent dialogue on a wide array of topics. The team then had very productive one on one discussions with community members following the Q&A session.

The feedback collected through both the in-person and online community survey has provided a clear view of residents’ primary concerns:

  • Odour and dust management: These remain the most significant issues, with participants asking for concrete timelines on solution implementations and regular progress updates.
  • Commitment to transparency: Several attendees requested clearer communication on mitigation efforts, expressing a desire for more frequent and comprehensive updates.
  • Environmental and site rehabilitation focus: There is a strong expectation within the community for Cockburn Cement to prioritise environmental sustainability, site rehabilitation, and ongoing dust control.

We received a total of 54 survey responses, with a mix of written submissions on the day and digital responses afterwards. These survey responses provide quantitative insights that we are reviewing to help shape our actions and focus areas going forward.
