On Monday, 2 May 2022 Adbri (Cockburn Cement’s parent company), released its first Net Zero Emissions (NZE) Roadmap with a goal to achieve net-zero emissions by 2050. The document sets out the required actions and targets to decarbonise the business.
Our journey so far
Since 2010, Adbri has achieved a 32% reduction in operational GHG emissions with more than $50 million invested in projects delivering abatement outcomes over the past decade.
An important part of this roadmap is Adbri’s commitment to phase out the use of coal at its Cockburn Cement Munster site by the end of 2024. This action will assist in achieving our short and medium-term emission reduction targets.
Supporting industry
We recognise the importance of a strong Australian manufacturing future and the critical contribution of our products to the economy. Adbri is committed to finding solutions to reduce operational emissions from the manufacturing of lime and cement, especially following increased supply chain risks in recent years.
We have made a previous commitment to phase out coal at Munster by 2021, which we acknowledge has not been met. However, in recent years our team has been working towards the successful transition from coal to natural gas.
This announcement follows already significant reductions in our operational reliance on coal. Coal represents approximately 50% of our fuel mix in 2021, compared to 80% in 2017.
