Clinker Kiln Demolition Update

CCL advises that it will shortly commence preparation works for the demolition of the three clinker kiln stacks and slurry bottles at the Munster site.

Demolition works on the stacks are expected to begin in mid-August. Clinker has not been manufactured at the Munster site since 2014, with the kiln and stacks in care and maintenance since that time. Given there are no plans to recommence clinker production, CCL will demolish the three (3) clinker kiln chimney stacks and the slurry bottles and progressively work towards rehabilitating this part of our site.

Demolition Process

The demolition works will involve the progressive ‘nibbling’ of the chimney stacks with the use of cranes and is expected to take approximately four months. This same method was used successfully for the demolition of the old Kiln 5 stack in 2013 as part of the bag filter upgrade.

All demolition material will be removed and transported by truck to approved landfill or, where possible, the steel will be recycled. The demolition contractor, MACS has a Health, Safety and Environmental Management Plan in place to manage any demolition impact on the site and the community.

The two pre-heater towers will remain at the Munster site which will continue to be used for lime manufacture, while cement milling will be consolidated at our Kwinana operations by 2023, as part of the $199 million Kwinana Upgrade Project.

Community Impact

Colin Powers, Regional Operations Manager Cockburn Cement said that the works would significantly benefit the local community.

“The demolition of the Clinker Kiln Stacks will improve the local Munster and Beeliar skyline and improve the visual amenity of the Munster site.

“We’re very conscious of our impact on the local communities where we operate. It is expected that the noise and dust from the demolition will be minimal with no explosives or blasting required for the approved demolition works,” Powers said.
